No amount of rain was going to stop last weekend’s Inter College Mud Touch Football competition from going ahead. The tournament kicked off on Friday evening with high quality play across Saturday and Sunday, which did not disappoint.
The competition was fierce and saw our Union girls battle it out in a thrilling first match against Grace College. Jane Surman, Emily Mccoll and Ashlee Zugno all crossed the try line with the Union girls taking the victory 3-2.
Saturday morning saw the Union boys take on International House with Union cruising home to a comfortable 14-0 win. Nathan Kerr, Tom Primmer and Charlie Slaney were all standouts during this game.
The girls finished off Saturday afternoon by taking advantage of the well-used fields with a good old-fashioned mudslide after three hard fought games that day. Even the spectators were not spared, with everyone getting involved and making the most of the afternoon and the wet conditions.
The tournament concluded on Sunday with the girl’s defeating International House 13-0. Meanwhile the boys fought tooth and nail with Cromwell College, unfortunately going down in the end 3-5.
A special mention goes to both Liam Ghietti and Madison Young for their roles as convenors for the teams and also to Ben Oliver who volunteered his time to coach the girls’ team.
All in all the weekend saw some great quality touch football played, with the Union boys finishing 6th and the girls placing 7th overall. It was great to see the determination of all players as they all gave 110% every match and no amount of mud could faze them.
